Ledger® Live: Desktop® — Getting Started®

Ledger Live Desktop is the official companion application for Ledger hardware wallets, designed to let users manage their cryptocurrency portfolio directly from a computer. Unlike online wallets or exchange accounts, it works in tandem with a physical Ledger device to keep private keys offline at all times. The application is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and it requires a Ledger device such as the Nano X or Nano S Plus to function fully.

The core appeal of Ledger Live Desktop lies in its security model. Every transaction must be physically confirmed on the connected hardware wallet, meaning that even if a computer is compromised by malware, an attacker cannot move funds without pressing the buttons on the device itself. Private keys never leave the secure element chip inside the Ledger device. The app itself does not require an email or password login; access is granted through the hardware wallet, and user data is stored locally on the computer rather than on Ledger's servers.

The interface is organized around a main dashboard that displays the total portfolio balance in a chosen fiat currency, along with an asset distribution chart and recent transaction history. A sidebar menu provides access to key sections: Home for the portfolio overview, Accounts for managing individual crypto accounts, Swap for exchanging one asset for another, Earn for staking opportunities, and Discover for exploring decentralized applications. A discreet mode can mask balances with asterisks for privacy when viewing the screen in public settings.

Functionally, Ledger Live Desktop covers the essential operations of crypto management. Users can send and receive over 15,000 types of cryptocurrencies and tokens, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and various ERC-20 tokens. The buy and sell features integrate third-party providers such as MoonPay, Coinbase, and PayPal, allowing users to compare rates and payment methods within the app. The swap function enables direct crypto-to-crypto exchanges without needing to sell to fiat first. For users interested in earning yield, the Earn section supports staking through providers like Lido, Kiln, and Figment, letting holders earn rewards on proof-of-stake assets.

The application also serves as a hub for device management. Firmware updates for the Ledger hardware wallet are delivered through Ledger Live, ensuring the device has the latest security patches. Users can install and uninstall blockchain apps on their device, manage account settings, and access Ledger Recover, a paid service for backing up recovery phrases. The interface includes a search bar for quickly locating assets or dApps, a transaction history page with CSV export, and a swap widget for quick exchanges without navigating away from the main view.

For setup, users download the application exclusively from Ledger's official website and install it on a compatible computer. After connecting the hardware wallet via USB or Bluetooth, the app guides the user through either creating a new wallet or restoring an existing one with a 24-word recovery phrase. A critical security note: Ledger will never ask for the recovery phrase online, by email, or over the phone. Any such request is a scam. The recovery phrase should only ever be entered directly on the hardware device itself.

In summary, Ledger Live Desktop is a desktop interface built for users who prioritize self-custody and offline key storage. It combines portfolio tracking, trading, staking, and device management into a single application, while the hardware wallet enforces a physical confirmation step for every transaction. The trade-off is that it requires owning a Ledger device and accepting the responsibility of safeguarding a recovery phrase, but for those committed to secure long-term crypto storage, it provides a coherent and functional toolkit.
